Round or square crystals? It’s one of the first choices you’ll come across when picking a diamond-painting kit. Both can create a beautiful, sparkling picture, but the experience of placing them feels a little different.
Our advice? Choose round crystals for a more relaxed introduction, or square crystals if you enjoy precision and a closely tiled finish. Here’s how to decide which suits you.
What’s the difference?
Diamond-painting crystals, often called diamonds, are the small, faceted pieces you place onto an adhesive canvas. Round and square describe their shape, not their material.
Round crystals leave small spaces between them, so a little of the printed canvas can remain visible. Square crystals are designed to sit edge to edge, creating a more continuous mosaic effect when neatly aligned.
Round crystals: relaxed and forgiving
With no straight edges to line up, round crystals can feel easier to place. You still need to position each one over its symbol, but you don’t have to rotate it to match the direction of the row.
That makes round crystals a lovely option for beginners, casual crafting sessions or anyone who prefers to focus on the rhythm of placing crystals rather than perfect alignment.
The spaces between the crystals are part of the finished look. They aren’t a sign that you’ve missed anything, provided each marked position has its crystal.
Square crystals: precise and satisfying
Square crystals reward a little extra care. Their straight edges need to line up with neighbouring crystals, so placement can feel more deliberate, especially while you’re getting started.
If you love tidy rows, detailed work and the satisfaction of watching a picture fit together like a mosaic, squares could be your favourite. They aren’t reserved for experienced diamond painters, either. A patient beginner can absolutely start with a square kit.
Aim for straight placement rather than forcing crystals into a space. If a section looks crowded, check the alignment before continuing.
Which shape sparkles more?
Both shapes can look wonderfully sparkly. The effect depends on the crystals’ faceting, quality, colours and lighting, not just whether they’re round or square. Choose the finish you enjoy rather than assuming one shape will always shine more.
Which should you choose for your first kit?
If you’re undecided, we’d recommend round crystals for a relaxed first project. They let you get used to picking up and placing diamonds without also thinking about the direction of each piece.
But if a square-crystal design is the one you love, don’t let being a beginner put you off. Work in small sections, take your time with the first few rows and enjoy learning as you go.
The size and complexity of the design matter too. A large round-crystal project can still be a bigger commitment than a small square-crystal one.
A few tips for either shape
- Peel back only a small section of the protective covering at a time to help keep the adhesive clean.
- Use a comfortable workspace with good lighting so the canvas symbols are easy to read.
- Check each crystal’s position as you work, especially when starting a new section.
- Take regular breaks. Diamond painting should feel like time for you, not a race to finish.
Our verdict: choose the experience you’ll enjoy
Choose round crystals if you want a forgiving, easy-going crafting experience. Choose square crystals if you enjoy careful placement and a closely tiled look.
There’s no wrong choice, and you don’t need to stick with one shape forever. Start with a design you love, enjoy the process and let your next project be a chance to try something different.
